Listen to 2GB Sydney with Clinton Maynard regarding the rising trend of car theft despite modern security technology. Motor vehicle theft has increased by 4.87% across the state, with hotspots including Blacktown, the Central Coast, and Liverpool.
A significant concern is the use of advanced tools to steal cars without keys. Thieves exploit Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) machines, typically used for vehicle diagnostics, to reprogram keyless entry systems, allowing them to start and steal cars easily. These devices are readily available online for as little as $30. To prevent theft, experts recommend using diagnostic port locks, storing car keys away from vehicles to prevent signal theft, and using signal-blocking boxes.
Certain vehicles, particularly Holden Commodores, Toyotas, and Subarus, are most frequently targeted due to their high numbers on the road. Simple preventative measures include parking in garages, installing GPS trackers, and avoiding leaving valuables in cars. Additionally, 12% of car theft cases result from vehicles being left unlocked.
Interestingly, old-fashioned steering wheel locks, known as “club locks,” are making a comeback as an effective theft deterrent. Gina emphasised the importance of securing vehicles properly and staying vigilant against evolving theft techniques.
