Ron Wilson - 2SM

2SM with Ron Wilson on 13 May 2025

Gina joined Ron Wilson on 2SM radio to discuss Bondi Junction stabbing attack and the security guard.

In response to the Bondi Junction stabbing tragedy, an inquest has revealed serious shortcomings in security operations, including that a single CCTV operator was monitoring 700 cameras and was on a bathroom break during the attack. Security expert Gina Field called the testimony “traumatic” and emphasised that while the guards could not have prevented the incident, the inquest exposes critical issues in the broader security industry.

Gina highlighted:

  • Severe understaffing and inadequate training, including reports that one guard was on their first day.
  • Poor communication systems and lack of clear protocols for emergency response.
  • Devaluation of the security profession, noting security personnel were not adequately prepared for an event of such magnitude.
  • Need for role-specific training based on risk profiles (e.g., shopping centres vs. cash transit).
  • Recognition that security guards were the first responders, stressing their importance alongside police.

She described the inquest as “the one we had to have,” hoping it drives reform in staffing, training standards, and recognition of the critical role security plays in public safety. Gina also suggested that Australia should consider international models for improving security strategy.
