In a 4BC interview with Carla Bignasca, operational security expert Gina Field from Nepean Regional Security discussed the rise in home break-ins across Greater Brisbane—over 8,000 reported in 2024—and the growing concern around how criminals are using online tools to target properties. She highlighted how thieves are “shopping” online by analysing real estate videos, social media posts, and Google Street View images to gather intel on homes, layouts, and security gaps.
Gina explained that while many residents still leave doors and windows unlocked, thieves are becoming more strategic, using both digital tools and opportunistic methods. She encouraged homeowners to reduce their digital footprint by blurring their homes on Google Maps and tightening physical security—like locking side gates and power boxes that could disable security systems.
Despite concerns that a blurred home might attract attention, Gina believes the benefits outweigh the risks, especially when combined with visible deterrents like cameras and alarm systems. She emphasised that layered security can dissuade criminals from choosing your property over a less-protected one.
