Gina’s Interview on Radio 2CC Canberra Breakfast with Stephen Cenatiempo

AI-powered security cameras are becoming increasingly common in Australian homes, offering features such as recognising people, animals and movement. In this interview, operational security expert and NRS Security founder Gina Field explains that while AI can be a valuable security tool, homeowners should not treat cameras as a complete security solution.

Gina highlights the importance of maintaining basic physical security measures alongside technology. Locking doors and windows, securing side gates and protecting electrical boxes remain simple but effective ways of reducing opportunities for intruders. She notes that many residential break-ins still occur because doors, windows or other access points have been left unsecured.

The discussion also examines the limitations of AI camera technology. AI systems can generate false positives by identifying animals, headlights or ordinary activity as potential threats, while false negatives can result in genuine security events being missed. Frequent notifications can also lead homeowners to become desensitised and eventually stop checking alerts altogether.

Gina’s key message is that home security works best as a layered approach rather than relying on a single device. Cameras can provide useful detection and evidence, but good habits, secure access points and practical preventative measures remain essential to protecting a home, its occupants and valuable property.
