ABC Far North Queensland

ABC Far North Queensland Interview with Phil Brandel on 16th January 2025

In the ABC interview with Phil Brandel, Gina Field discusses the concerning rise in knife attacks in retail stores in Far North Queensland. She highlights the increasing danger faced by retail workers and security guards, with more incidents of knife-related violence reported in these settings. As a result, a supermarket chain has withdrawn from selling kitchen knives in its stores across Australia.

Gina also expresses concern about the effectiveness of current safety measures, criticising retailers for providing cheap and ineffective protective vests for security personnel. She suggests that simply introducing knife-proof vests may not be the best solution if they do not offer adequate protection against knife stabbing attacks, and calls for more comprehensive approaches to ensuring the safety of workers.
