Channel 7 Sunrise Interview on 29 December 2025

As Australians prepare for the busy summer holiday season, new data suggests residential thefts could increase by as much as 19%, prompting insurance companies and security professionals to urge homeowners to take preventative action. Appearing on Sunrise, security expert Gina Field outlined the most common mistakes households continue to make and the practical measures that significantly reduce the risk of break-ins.

Gina revealed that 31% of Australians still leave their homes unlocked — the equivalent of one unsecured home every six minutes. She stressed that families should treat home protection with the same importance as their travel checklist. Before leaving, homeowners should lock all doors and gates, avoid hiding spare keys outside, arrange for trusted neighbours or family to keep an eye on the property, and ensure security systems are fully operational.

One of the most common habits Gina warns against is hiding spare keys under rocks or pot plants, a practice she describes as the “Nana trick” that criminals now expect. Instead, she recommends using secure lockboxes if emergency access is required. She also highlights the importance of securing side gates and electricity boxes, areas often overlooked but frequently targeted by offenders.

To deter thieves while away, Gina advises making homes appear lived in. This includes using motion sensor lighting, leaving selected lights on, keeping lawns and hedges well maintained, and ensuring bins are placed out only on the correct day. Simple touches such as arranging washing on the line and leaving blinds up — while keeping valuables out of sight — help reinforce the appearance of occupancy.

Finally, Gina emphasises the value of modern security technology, including cameras, alarms, and video doorbells, which provide both strong deterrence and valuable monitoring while families enjoy their summer break. Her advice offers Australians a clear, achievable framework to safeguard their homes and enjoy their holidays with confidence
