Sonshine Interview Morning with Doug 7 May 2026

Security expert Gina Field joined Mornings on Sunshine to discuss the growing concern around Wi-Fi jammers, also known as Wi-Fi blockers, and how they can interfere with some home security camera systems. The conversation followed reports of a Melbourne incident where thieves allegedly used this type of device to prevent a homeowner from accessing footage during the theft of a luxury vehicle.

Gina explained that while Wi-Fi jamming is not yet widespread in Australia, it is a risk homeowners should understand, particularly as similar methods have become more common overseas. These devices are illegal in Australia, but they can still be sourced online, which means households relying solely on wireless DIY camera systems may be more vulnerable than they realise.

Her advice was practical and clear: where possible, hardwired camera systems provide a stronger level of protection because they do not rely on Wi-Fi signals to record footage. For those using wireless cameras, Gina recommended choosing systems with built-in SD card recording, setting up alerts if the Wi-Fi connection drops, and ensuring passwords are strong, regularly changed, and not based on personal details such as pets’ names, children’s names or birthdays.

Gina also highlighted the importance of layered home security. Simple measures such as sensor lights, locked side gates, trimmed hedges, stronger door screws, steering locks, alarms, cameras, lighting timers and even visible signs of activity can all help reduce risk. Her key message was that modern technology is useful, but it should be supported by reliable, common-sense security habits that make homes harder to target.
